likely boehner, mcconnell, pelosi and reid will come out of. let's talk about the deal. what if there's a deal, craig, for, i don't know, say 4 hr $500,000 the threshold of who gets taxes and who keeps -- everybody under that number keeps their tax cuts. everyone over pays more and there's spending cuts. is that a bad deal? >> yeah. i think it is. let me tell you why. because you can't get everything out of this deal that you want and frankly, all we're doing is kicking the can down the road. you know as well as i do this does nothing to deal with the $1 trillion plus deficits we have yearly. this is the fifth year in a row, we're going to have $20 trillion worth of debt on top of $48 trillion worth a long-term liabilities by the time mr. obama leaves office. this is the time to deal with this issue. we've been kicking it down the road ten years. we promised the nation in 2011 under the budget deal with the sequesters we would not let this get away from us. we shouldn't this time. for mr. obama to suggest i've cut a trillion in spending because he saved money on the wars in afgh

for several years when he was the ranking member back when pelosi and democrats were in power. he would introduce that budget as the minority budget. 20, 25% routinely voted against. when the tea party with cavemen and when republicans retake the house and that ryan was chairman of the house budget committee, he was very, very clever to develop consensus among all these think tanks, leadership as well and the small number of moderates were drowned out and possibly the bill passed with four republicans voting against it, which was an astonishing consensus. i is widely admired amongst the freshman class. he's a very clever guy. as my friend at "the new york times" magazine wrote in his piece recently on ryan is he's been at this guys to put up the seat who makes you feel like he's about politics and not about politics. he's practiced his own brand of politics. >> showed romney and ryan lose on november's nixon get reelected on the same day to receive in wisconsin and returns to the chorus? is that okay with him and with that he okay with him will ryan with his newfound celebrity pos

pelosi, if you just compare them, technocratically speaking, nancy pelosi never lost a vote. she never once got so confused and lost control of the group she was supposed to be leading, she never got caught out saying something was going to pass. she never put up something to pass and had it fail. whether or not you like what nancy pelosi stands for, as a speaker of the house, nancy pelosi was good at her job. john boehner is not good at his job. we've ventured this as a hypothesis very early on in his speakership, i mean right from the beginning. it seemed like there might be something amiss, right? on the first day as speaker, he tried to have republicans pull off the stunt where they would read the whole constitution from the floor of the house. but even on day one, john boehner could not manage his own symbolic gesture. they skipped parts of the constitution. they skipped parts they did not like. and some parts they skipped because they were reading it out of a loose leaf binder and the pages stuck together. right then we should have known that was a bad sign. john boehner did not

indications of what happened in the meeting. i'm told by nancy pelosi's office that she's saying senators reed and mcconnell will try to come up with something. they also said that speaker boehner said in the meeting that he won't move anything until the senate moves first. and nancy pelosi called the meeting constructive and candid. that's the first indication we have on the record from one of the leaders about what happened in that meeting. all eyes are on the 6:30 p.m. house reconveninreconvening. what if anything will they be able to vote on? we don't know the answer as of now. we do know the president did not make any new offers in the meeting today. >> it is staggering for the president to call the congressional leaders in at 3:00 on a friday and tell them to come up with a plan, when that could have been the case this morning. to give them time to come up with a plan. >> you're right, i think based on what we know now publicly it would appear that the white house sort of let the expectations game get ahead of them here. because there was talk in washington early on in the

to be continued. in some ways, we do not see it as big as a cut. speaker pelosi was important to us in the jobs act in getting a lot of money put into the sba program. it allowed california to be the beneficiary of having hired guarantees for banks, no sba loans fees. in the first quarter of the year, lending in california was the most we ever did. we did $1 billion worth of small business loans in december, for example. that is something we have never done before. but that was a one time funding piece. going forward, on the loan side, we are not going to see the cuts have an impact on sba lending. the big issue we see are two issues. the value of california real- estate, stability of businesses in california, and the confidence of our workers looking for credit. those are variables that would be important. >> thank you. we have a question in the back. >> good afternoon. thank you to nancy pelosi and for you panelists for providing this informative seminars. for our young company, we are a distribution company. i just heard you mention that you do not loan for the sale of alcohol. i

of age in politics in the clinton administration and watched pelosi and harry reid vote for tax increases under bill clinton that are the taxes we would go back to if we do nothing. at the same time, i watched nancy pelosi lead the charge against the bush tax cuts that ultimately now they want to keep 98% of. the truth is if we go over the cliff on a tax basis, we're only going back to the clinton era taxes. if we don't change spending, we're going to stay over the cliff. even if we go back to the clinton tax rates, the clinton tax rates, which is what the cliff is described as, you still have nearly half a trillion dollars a year, $5 trillion over ten years worth of deficit. that's because while we grew the -- under bush the taxes revenue went up 25%, and spending went up 100% in the last 12 years. if you put back the revenue from the higher taxes, you still have a deficit. that's what we're trying to change. >> we kind of are where we are, and no one is talking about spending cuts. they're talking about keeps taxes low, which everybody agrees. let me ask a specific question fi

leader nancy pelosi tomorrow afternoon at the white house. to try to find out if there is a way to avert the fiscal cliff. today, after the president returned from his vacation in hawaii, he did meet with his senior advisors. they did conduct some back- channel negotiations as they have been during the holidays on a bill to possibly avert the fiscal cliff. those talks i'm told did not make much progress. the face-to-face conversations may fact create the possibility of a breakthrough. but right now the president has no new proposals to give his congressional leaders. he will stick with what he told the nation on friday-- raise income taxes for households earning more than $250,000, extend unemployment benefits for those americans out of work for more than six months, and try to find some other means to avert the fiscal cliff before that deadline, and tomorrow, may give us a glimmer of hope but as i said, the white house does not consider this a breakthrough, but everyone is and will be talking. >> glor: major garrett at the white house. thank you. all of this uncertainty is already
